Aiken in the Alley – a free lecture series hosted by the University of South Carolina Aiken’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences – returns 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, with “The Spanish Vanguard and Soccer Poetry” with Professor Tim Ashton.
This talk will cover two of Spain’s most respected poets of the 20th Century –Rafael Alberti and Miguel Hernández– each of whom, after establishing themselves as part of the Spanish vanguard, broke from traditional poetic themes to write poems dedicated to soccer players’ heroic efforts in matches the poets had attended, effectively debasing the previously held stereotype that athletics and intellectual pursuits are incompatible.
Aiken in the Alley is a series of lectures, conversations, and music from USCA faculty members at 11 a.m. on select Thursdays from Jan. 29 to Apr. 23 at 139 Newberry St. SW. Presentations are free and open to the public.
